The Old White Swan, York

One of the things that I can easily say I missed the most throughout my time at university (other than my dog) has to be the Sunday roast. I was quite lucky in that my family usually ate most of our meals together, and as such were able to share each others company and snippets of our day. The Sunday roast didn’t bring us together in the same way it does for other families, however it was still something I missed. Part of that was the food. My mum makes a good roast and I enjoyed it. But I think part of it was also the ritualistic nature of it – from helping prepare the food, to eating it, to reading the Sunday papers afterwards and then watching whatever happened to be on television. Turtle Bay, York

Last week, James and I finally made it to Turtle Bay, a restaurant which is relatively new in York. I had previously been to the one in Manchester, and James had been for a drink, but neither of us had been together and we were about due a date night! We arrived just before 7 – perfect timing for happy hour! Cocktails and wine are available on 2 for 1 until 7pm and then again after 10pm. Due to the Caribbean nature of the food and drinks, if you like rum then this is the place to go. I’ve never been to a restaurant with a rum menu before! Even if you don’t like rum (I’m not a massive fan), you should find something that you enjoy and all the cocktails are quite varied… the one James had came with a spoon of apricot jam!

Brew and Brownie, York

Brew and Brownie is one of those places that you’ve probably heard of if you live in York. It’s a cute little cafe round the corner from the Minster and over the road from the Museum Gardens and York Explore. They make homemade cakes, serve artisan coffee and have a gorgeous instagram feed – what’s not to love?

Pitcher and Piano, York

Sometimes being spontaneous can be the best way of going for a meal. In the past going out for a meal has been a treat, but one that has been carefully planned and booked in advance. However, the other day my boyfriend and I decided to go for a meal quite spontaneously and it was wonderful.
