Exploring the Southern Cotswolds: Castle Combe, Tetbury and more

The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which stretches across parts of Southern England. It’s characterised by picturesque villages made of yellow Cotswold stone and is what many people might think of as ‘typical England’. Although I’ve heard lots about the Cotswolds, and seen plenty of pictures of some of its famous villages, it isn’t an area that I’ve explored extensively. However, with some recent time off I was determined to change that, particularly as the Cotswolds are within surprisingly easy reach of Bristol. A number of locations across the Southern Cotswolds were what I had in mind, and I’ve shared a few in this guide.

Brunch at Yurt Lush, Bristol

I’ve said it before, and I’ll happily say it again – brunch is one of my favourite meals of the day. Associated by me with lazy weekends, exploring new places or seeing friends, brunch is a fun and tasty treat. I could quite happily spend every Saturday going to different trendy cafes and trying out their brunch options. However, my money would soon run out and if I did it all the time it wouldn’t quite feel as special, so for now it’s still an occasional thing. A friend coming to Bristol for the weekend was just the excuse I needed to try somewhere new and when a colleague suggested Yurt Lush to me, I decided not to look too much further.

A day trip to Stourhead

Stourhead is one of those National Trust properties that I somehow knew about, despite having never previously been. Its gardens are world-famous and I instantly recognised them from photos that I had seen elsewhere. What I hadn’t realised was that it’s not actually that far from Bristol, and is an easy day trip if you have access to transport. As soon as I had twigged this, I was keen to dust of my National Trust membership card which had been languishing in my purse for a while, and explore somewhere new.

My favourite places in and around Bristol

I’ve been living in Bristol for almost a year now and time really seems to have flown! I was quite intimidated by moving to a bigger city than I’ve ever lived in before, but it’s nice to be somewhere where there is always something going on. I’m aware that this list that I’m about to share is quite limited, but getting to know Bristol better is still one of my aims for this year. It might be because there’s so much to explore, or it might be because I haven’t actually visited that many different areas (I’m definitely guilty of just going back to the same places!), but I know there is still a lot to see.

A Day Trip to Cheddar

I first visited Cheddar as a child on a family holiday, so it’s odd to think that I now live under an hour away! Somehow, I’ve ended up going to Cheddar three times in the last year – mainly because it seems to be the place that all our visitors want to see in order to relive their own childhood memories. Cheddar is a really easy day trip from Bristol and is a great place to escape the city and see some of the beautiful countryside in the area.
