Resident’s Weekend 2016

I know I’ve mentioned being a tourist in your own city before, but there really is no better time to do it in York than as part of Resident’s Weekend, although you do have to be prepared to put up with the queues! Anyone with a valid York Card or York Student Card can gain free entry to a large range of sites, or can get discounts from a range of shops and restaurants.

The art of serenity

Someone once told me that in times of stress you need to: “Act like a duck. On the surface you look calm, but underneath everything is paddling like mad!” Those words have stayed with me and are something that I have aspired to, although it’s not always easy. I’ve always got stressed quite easily. Nowhere near as bad as some people I know, but I do sometimes feel as if I’m on a constant treadmill and can’t get off. I also tend to take it personally and to heart if things go wrong, even if it’s not my fault. For the past few years, my new year’s resolution has been to take a more relaxed approach to life, and needless to say I haven’t managed to achieve it yet.

The lost art of saying thank you

When I was younger, my Mum used to make me sit down and write thank you letters to anyone who had bought me anything for Christmas or for my birthday. And it wasn’t enough to just say thank you. I had to write about what I was doing/going to do with any money that had been given, why I liked whatever gift it happened to be, and if that didn’t fill the space – what I had done to celebrate. I hated it. The best bit used to be getting to use the notecards and stationery that I didn’t normally have use for.

… and a few things I’m hoping to get out of 2016!

Happy New Year! We’ve now reached 2016 and many people will be turning their thoughts to New Year’s Resolutions. I’ve actually already written a blog on New Year’s Resolutions as part of my current job, and it got me thinking about what I want to get of 2016, and where I’d like to see myself in a year’s time. Some of these things aren’t things I have full control over, but are things I want to see happen. I won’t be a failure if I don’t get there, but they are things I’d like to achieve. Rather than resolutions, perhaps these are goals. Either way, here they are. What do you want to get out of this year?

A few things I learned in 2015…

Another year is almost over and it’s time to look ahead to 2016. New resolutions will no doubt be made and broken, but hopefully it will be another exciting year. 2015 has been a bit of a whirlwind (where has the time gone?!) but I’ve done quite a lot. Very pleased I’ve managed to do more travelling – something I’m hoping to keep up in 2016. I started a blog, and have kept it up (although admittedly there was a period of silence!) – hopefully I will keep it going this next year, or if not, start something new. I graduated and have my first ‘grown-up’ job. I still sometimes wonder when I stopped being a student, and what I’m doing in this strange and unfamiliar adult world, but it’s getting easier. This time last year I read a friend’s post about what she learned over the past year. It…
