The Yak and Yeti is one of those restaurants that since my first visit, I have found myself returning to for a variety of occasions. It is a Gurkha restaurant, run by a former Gurkha, and was the first Nepalese restaurant in York. It looks quite humble – you walk up a narrow and slightly dubious looking staircase to reach the restaurant where you can decide whether to sit at a table, or on cushions on the floor. Despite the restaurant appearing quite small, they are happy to serve large parties if booked in advance. For my most recent visit, we were a party of 16.
If you’ve not had Nepalese food before, I would recommend talking to the staff about what you like. Most of the main courses are either curry based or a stir fry, and come with different levels of hotness. If you are going with a group of friends then I’d recommend getting a selection of different dishes to share – the best way to discover new flavours and find out what you really like!
My most recent visit to Yak and Yeti was last week, and once again it didn’t disappoint (although due to an issue with the air-con it was incredibly hot and sticky!). The staff were friendly and accommodating, and didn’t mind that we had an addition to the table at the last minute. I went for the same meal I had last time I visited which (whilst not particularly adventurous) was very tasty. I started off with lamb momos, which are steamed lightly spiced dumplings which are apparently popular in many regions of Nepal.
For my main course I enjoyed the Yak and Yeti Beef, which is marinated in spices and then stir-fried with mixed peppers and onions. It is mild, so if you are not a fan of hot food then this is a dish I would recommend. I had it with the Bhuteko Bhat, Nepalese-style rice fried in ghee with cumin, garlic, and mixed vegetables. Be aware that the stir-fry doesn’t come in a sauce, so if you want something that will mix better with the rice then I would recommend a curry dish. The Everest Lamb is always popular. Also, you needn’t worry about sharing rice. One portion will serve one person – if you split it between two then you may not have enough.
I’ve never had a dessert at the Yak and Yeti as I usually feel adequately full after my meal. I would strongly recommend Yak and Yeti as I have never been disappointed with a meal and there is a welcoming atmosphere. If you are looking for an alternative to other Asian restaurants one night, or just fancy something new, you should consider Nepalese.
Sounds so interesting, I need to head into York more often for dinner!
